in northern california has hit a snag in a major upgrade to its harbor. crescent city was badly damaged by the march, 2011, tsunami triggered by that major earthquake in japan. while crews were in the process of shoring up the docks with reinforced steel pilings, the drill bit broke. now they have to pound them in by hand just to get them through the winter. crescent center is about 15 miles south of the oregon border and geologists say it makes it a prime target for tsunamis. >>> plans for a vegas party train from california are a step closer to becoming a reality. a nevada company has signed a conditional agreement with union pacific railroad. the las vegas railway express will start in san bernardino county and then end in sin city. the trip would take about five hours. the company plans to include an ultra lounge, tvs for sports, private cars for patbachelor parties and food an drink. tickets would be about $99 each way. the hope is to get the train running by the end of next year. >> it sounds a lot better than it looks, that cargo train. >> yeah, it looks pretty fancy. >>>

have stores here in california that we're expecting later in the day. so tlar number of stores across the country where we're seeing more of these protests. but walmart says you have to look beyond just the bodies there. when they look at who showed up and walked off the shop, only about 50 employees did not show up as they were scheduled. they're saying they have the same number of employees who didn't show up for work last year as they had this year. so what walmart is saying is they believe and they keep pushing this, is this is a union-backed effort that as far as the walmart employees, they believe this is limited. talk to some of these people in the picket lines today and they will tell you that this is a very important move for them. that they are hoping to make a message on a potent shopping day. >> i'm getting the sense that the protest and picket lines are keeping any shoppers away? >> not at all. when actually we talked to some of the employees who were working overnight here at this particular walmart the employees said they had a robust black friday. there were a lot of s

forecast coming up in just a bit >> california highway patrol out in force this thanksgiving holiday, trying to crack down on drunk driving. kron 4's charles clifford has details on that. >> reporter: from 6:00 p.m. to 11:50 p.m. , california highway patrol in what they call a maximum enforcement period. on thanksgiving day, the highway patrol released some statistics on its first day of that enforcement effort. so far, the highway patrol said statewide, eight people have been killed in fatal collisions, chp said 262 people have been arrested for driving under the influence. last year. there were three fatalities and 267 drivers were charged with dui. here in the bay area, no fatal accidents and 50dui arrests. now, once again, the maximum enforcement period lasts until 11:59 p.m. on sunday evening. in east bay, charles clifford, kron 4 news. >>> now to a story you will only see on kron4. a family in vallejo looking for the driver they say killed their grandmother. last friday, the elderly woman was walking home from the store a few blocks from her home that's when the family said a g

name is victor car michael and i live in pacifica, california. my position is it makes no sense at all to merge these two studies. they are completely different entities. the sharp park redevelopment should be separated for two specific reasons. one is the golf course within the sharp park area is located right on top of a [speaker not understood] area. that complicates the e-i-r a great deal. me. and this revenue funding is the primary source of funding for school districts in california. most school districts including ours. and the left of that chart is from fy-2007-08. and it show that is we received on per unit average daily attendance funding of 5776 per student. six years ago. and the top line, the blue line shows what the state should have funded per unit of ada to meet their statutory cost of living adjustments. that's based on a formula in statute. and it's representing what we should receive year to year. you see from 07-08 from that level of 5776, cola did increase each year. and in 12-13, the current fiscal year, we should receive $6,697 per unit of ada or student. and that has not happened. and what has happened is the orange line. that shows the actual. not inflation adjusted. just the actual amount of revenue funding we have received for each student. instead of going up and matching the blue line or even staying flat. matching the purple line. we have seen significant reductions shown by the orange line. we went from 5776 to 5326, a steep drop in the f

might have been done i wanted to write a book that was contemporary and set in california. i knew i wanted to write a mother daughter story line. that's what i began with. it was the first time i said, this character not necessarily has to be asian. none of these characters necessarily have to be asian. i was of mind opposite of what you are saying happened through the book. what happened was the more i started to research when i discovered warner's, ime wantedo write. i was feeling older as a person and wanted to translate that into a book. when i thought i would write about the care taking situation and wanted to write about a mother and daughter and i thought was there an aging disease? where children grow old quickly. by the time they are 7 or 8 they look like little old people because they age so quickly. the first thing i asked myself is there a version of this disease for older people. does it start later in a person's life? as i'm researching i discover warner's syndrome and that's how it came to be that particular disease in the book. i thought this works because she would

called relocation and resiliency, the japanese american internment in california. and both of those are up on the 6th floor and this is the last week, so if you haven't a chance to see these exhibits yet, we really encourage you to go on up and see them because they will be closing on sunday. we really want to thank community works for bringing the exhibit if they came for me today to the san francisco public library. and here to tell you a little bit more about community works is ruth morgan, so help me welcome ruth morgan. thank you. . >> thank you. i do hope that if you haven't seen the exhibit, you will go up to the skylight gallery and see it. the project actually involved over 225 young people who studied the japanese internment through the personal stories of 15 people who were interned or impacted by the internment. and the exhibition highlights the individual stories of each of the japanese americans who came into the classroom, as well as the rich student responses to these stories. the project really gave the students space to make very meaningful connections between the
